A nuisance animal is typically one that causes undue disturbance or poses a threat to public health or safety. Nuisance animal laws may define these animals, ranging from pets that bark incessantly, causing noise pollution, to wild creatures that damage property.

The animal may be damaging property such as buildings, crops, pets, livestock, gardens, or public parks. Wildlife may threaten human health or safety by spreading diseases; through direct attacks; or accidentally, because of collisions with cars, airplanes, or trains.

If non-lethal tactics have been used in the past, without success, the Division of Wildlife may issue a lethal permit to allow the landowner to destroy nests, conduct a goose roundup, or shoot geese. These permits can only be used March 11 through August 31.
